Character Set

The Fortran character set consists of

• letters:

  A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z
   a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z

• digits:

  0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

• special characters:

  <blank> = + - * / ( ) , . ' : ! " % & ; < > ? $

• and the underscore character `_'.

Special characters are used as operators, as separators or delimiters, or for grouping.

`?' and `$' have no special meaning.

Lower case letters are equivalent to corresponding uppercase letters except in CHARACTER literals.

The underscore character can be used as a non-leading significant character in a name.
